Reception are taught phonics through Sound Start Phonics. Reading is a strong focus concentrating on decoding words, learning sight recognition by reading tricky words and developing comprehension skills.
Sound Start Phonics supports children to develop their sound blending skills with a range of story books and non-fiction books matched to their phonic ability. Children also develop their comprehension skills in stories by answering 'Find it' and 'Prove it' discussion questions.
Children are always actively involved in phonics lessons through 'My Turn, Your Turn', as well as partner work to ensure children answer every question, practise every activity through playing the role of 'teacher' and taking turns to read in their pairs.
