Autism

What is Autism?

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects information processing. People with autism have difficulties with social and communication skills. They have restricted interests and engage in repetitive behaviours. They also tend to experience sensitivity or discomfort from sensory stimulation such as certain lights or sounds.

Children with autism can face an array of challenges at school, from keeping pace in a busy class, to forming relationships with their peers, to struggling with sensory overload in the classroom, hallway, or dinner hall.

How do I get support for my autistic child?

The first step is to reach out to your child’s teacher and / or Rosary SENCO team. Depending on the level of need some pupils may be eligible for an Individualised Education Program (IEP) and / or suitable adaptations can be put into place in the classroom in order to support the child.
