Global Citizenship

Global Citizenship

global citizen is someone who is aware of and understands the wider world - and their place in it. They take an active role in their community, and work with others to make our planet more equal, fair and sustainable.

Through the UNCRC, we make our children aware of children’s rights around the world and how war, famine and natural disasters affect rights and the lives of young people affected.

Virtual School Partnership

In October 2018, through the British Council, our school entered into a virtual partnership with Alanwar Primary/Secondary School in Raymah province, Yemen. Since then we have shared information about each other’s schools and worked on projects like Perceptions (the children in both schools wrote and drew pictures about what they thought each other’s country is like) and have recently began a project together about climate and weather.

Our children have learned a lot about Yemen through the partnership. The Steering Group conducted research about Yemen and found out the following facts:

  • Yemen is one of the Arab world's poorest countries
  • It has been devastated by a civil war since 2014
  • According to the United Nations, the war has put 8.4 million people at risk of starvation and 22.2 million people - 75% of the population - in need of humanitarian assistance.
  • Severe malnutrition is threatening the lives of almost 400,000 children under the age of five.
  • Alanwar School is situated in the mountainous province of Raymah and in that area there are regular airstrikes.
  • The school often suffers from power cuts and shortages. There are also times when there is no running water in school.
  • Due to the ongoing situation in Yemen, the moment, children at Alanwar can only attend school on Monday to Wednesday, from 8am to 1pm.

However, the children at Alanwar School are resilient and keen to exercise their right to an education, to have freedom of expression and association and be able and to develop their talents.
